Welcome to ANBUG

More than 60 Volkswagen Beetle cars are still in perfect condition and are plying on the road of Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. These Beetle owners have come together many times since the year 2000 and have organized many fund raising events, rallies, rides and sometimes get-together parties just to have chats. These people have been bitten by this bug.

Nepali BeetlesLately, the government of Nepal has launched a campaign to scrap 20 years old vehicles from plying on the streets of Kathmandu which has placed a big question mark on the lives of these never-stopping bugs. The amount of tax imposed on these legendary bug is outrageous to many bug lovers due to which many of these cute little bugs are now put in hibernation. Moreover, giving continuity to the fund raising events, rallies, get-together parties was also important.  Every bug owner's feeling was a growing need of a body or a club to make sure the Beetles continue to rock and roll in this mountainous country of Nepal. This is how ANBUG was born in 2005.

Two years later we have about 60 registered members and the number is growing. We even have members who sold their fancy cars and bought a Beetle the people's car as the makers have rightly named it.

ANBUG & SAARC Car Rally 2007

In the month of March 2007, when the Commerce Ministers of South Asia failed to reach a breakthrough in the South Asian trade ties, wheels from the seven countries brought the deals together. A 30 day marathon journey covering seven countries, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Maldives went boosting connectivity and people to people relations and investors confidence.

There was a day when the lower belt of Nepal was completely in chaos from the revolution started by an indigenous community, these wheels of Saarc Car Rally passed through these lands spreading message of peace and harmony and brotherhood. Arriving in the Kathmandu Valley, there was none other than ANBUG's VW Beetle eagerly waiting to receive these wheels that were going around the seven countries.

More than 20 ANBUG Beetles received the cars and escorted them through the streets of Kathmandu. At the end of the day all the cars and Bugs congregated at Hotel Hyatt, Boudha for a party and press conference.
